12.05.2003 - In 1995, MAN Turbo received an order from a company in Russia, to manufacture a 200-bar integrally geared compressor for the production of fertilizer. With its five pinion shafts, the ten-stage compressor was the first of its kind worldwide. The integrally geared compressor, driven by an electric motor, was delivered as a fully assembled unit inclusive of all ancillary systems, oil and auxiliary units.

Carbon dioxide and ammonia are basic materials used in the synthesis of urea. In the urea synthesis process, the compressor compresses carbon dioxide from 1 bar to 200 bar. Single-shaft centrifugal compressors are normally used for this purpose in this process a ten-stage integrally geared compressor was used for the first time, replacing twelve reciprocating compressors.

The use of the integrally geared compressor compared with conventional centrifugal compressors permits peak efficiency ratings to be achieved thanks to optimum speed adjustment, axial intake and interstage cooling. The other advantages of the ten-stage integrally geared compressor are flexible operation, greater compactness and reduced investment costs.
