23.08.2004 - In 2003 MAN Turbo was awarded a contract from a Scandinavian customer for a geared turbo-compressor for the compression of vapours. The vapour originates from a process of the client. It is the aim of vapour recompression to render the energy contained therein usuable for the process.again. In this way the energy costs will be reduced, since the customer has not only to produce much less steam for feeding his unit, but can also utilize the steam which is available.

Together with a new production shop which was built the unit will be put into operation at the end of 2004.

To bring the pressure specified by customer from 0.4 bar(a) to the necessary discharge pressure of 2.7 bar(a) a three-stage geared turbo-compressor will be used. The discharge pressure was specified by customer.
The impellers are made from a titanium alloy to withstand the temperatures which are developing. In addition the vapour is cooled down by water injection not only in front of the stages but in the bypass pipe as well. The water is injected in surplus to ensure sufficient cooling in any case. Surplus water is transferred outward again via separator and will then be available again for injection.
The unit has been designed for different mass flows and varies between 27 t/h and 41 t/h so that vapour recompression fulfils the respective requirements of the process. Surplus vapour quantities are operated in the cycle mode. The scope of supply of MAN TURBO included the machine control (turbolog) and motor, motor starter and oil system.

When customer has placed an order for this unit with MAN Turbo as the second unit of this kind he has gone back to previous, good experience with MAN Turbo. Important features for the customer are the high degree of availability and variability of the unit. It is planned that the unit shall be available for continuous production more than 300 days per year and can be adapted to the quantities specified by production.
